Oklahoma City, OK — Wearing nothing but bikinis made from strategically placed lettuce leaves and standing next to a banner reading, “Get Fit! Go Vegetarian!” two lovely Lettuce Ladies from PETA will hand out delicious veggie hot dogs in downtown Oklahoma City on Wednesday. The action follows a report in Men’s Fitness magazine that ranked Oklahoma City the second-fattest city in America. Special invitations to the event have been extended to Mayor Mick Cornett, members of the City Council, and friends of the mayor. The delicious veggie dogs will be provided by Organic Gourmet.

When: Wednesday, April 1, 12 p.m.

Where: 2300 N. Lincoln Blvd. (intersection of N.E. 23rd Street and N. Lincoln Boulevard)

Why could Oklahoma City males use a healthy dose of veggie dogs? Meat consumption has been linked to heart disease, strokes, certain types of cancer, and even impotence, and vegetarians are, on average, significantly fitter and trimmer than meat-eaters. If that isn’t enough to make even the most die-hard carnivore go vegetarian, the suffering of factory-farmed animals and the environmental damage caused by meat production might do the trick. According to a U.N. report, raising animals for food is the leading source of the greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change.

“Oklahoma City residents’ love affair with barbecue and fried chicken could be making them fat–and literally killing them,” says Lettuce Lady Virginia Fort. “We hope that the city’s men–and women–will start trimming their waistlines, and the fastest and easiest way to do that is to leave animals off their plates.”
