Campaign promises often wilt after the election. Tax-cut promises are a frequent casualty.
By backtracking on tax-cut pledges even before the election, Barack Obama threatens to break Bill Clinton’s speed record. It wasn’t until a week before his first inauguration that Clinton openly reneged on his promise to cut taxes for the middle class.
There’s another similarity. Candidate Clinton and Candidate Obama both promised to raise taxes, too, but only on “the wealthy.” And both proceeded to widen the definition of “wealthy” to encompass more and more taxpayers.
During his campaign, Clinton said, “The only people who will pay more income taxes are the wealthiest 2 percent, those living in households making over $200,000 a year.” After the election, he proceeded to raise taxes across-the-board.
Less than a month into his presidency, the Washington Post headlined, “Clinton Asks Middle Class to Pay Higher Taxes; President Issues `Call to Arms’ To Restore Economic Vitality.” After Clinton’s Jan. 14, 1993, news conference, the Post wrote that Clinton “complained that it was only the press, not voters, who considered that issue [tax cuts] important.” Read more…

If Buttcrack Osama wins, it will be entirely the fault of moderate, big-spending, Constitution-disregarding Republicans. We had the chance back in ‘94 to actually start brining our nation back in line with the Constitution, and we have completely blown it. Maybe four years of the most socialist senator in the gubmint as president will wise us and the nation up. We need to start by voting out everyone who voted for the bailout, then disqualifying any of them from holding public office as a Republican ever again. Anything short of this is just sabre-rattling.

Well, Butchey, Obama did actually win…Oklahoma Christofascist screamers notwithstanding. If, and I stress the word IF, Obama must raise taxes, it will be to pay for the profligate spending of the so-called “conservative” liars in Congress. You called Obama the “most socialist senator”, but failed to define what you mean. If you mean a shared responsibility, then look no further than your Neo-Con nutjob buddies who gave more in corporate welfare than the entire 40 years of welfare programs to needy people in the United States. I find it hilarious how you so-called Christians have no problem with keeping the rich not only rich, but fabulously wealthy, but call poor people derogatory names. I’ve always wondered why you people never quote your so-called “savior” when it comes to matters involving money…Does the word hypocrite have ANY meaning for you?

Well, Cal, I’d have to say that you’re barking up the wrong tree. If you had read my post instead of spending half the day looking up the meaning of the word “profligate”, in some misguided attempt to deceive some that read this board, you’d realize that I was castigating the people you’re trying to lump me in with. We conservativfes have no problem with helping the poor, we just have a problem with using government-sponsored theft to do so. No one who voted for the bailout is a conservative in my book. Not Coburn, not Tancredo, not even Mary Felatin’. The people generally get the government they deserve, and all these people who are hoping Obama will give them the means to help themselves to some of what rightfully belongs to someone else — well, they’ll find out.
We’ll be back in four years, leaner, stronger, and without all the neocon cholesterol currently clogging up our party’s arteries.
