Community Opposes Casino Development; Asks Where Is Gov.Henry on This?

News 9’s Stacey Cameron (video) covered the community meeting last night that was organized to oppose a proposed Indian casino near Remington Park. The Shawnee Tribe, based 200 miles from Oklahoma City, announced earlier this year their plans to build a $400 million casino resort two miles from the park. From Cameron’s report:

“Phill Stewart, president of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, said he fears the casino could hurt the racing industry.

“It’ll be devastating; it’ll ruin Remington Park,” he said. “If we lose Remington Park, we lose horse racing in Oklahoma.”

Gloria Griffin, superintendent of the Millwood School District is worried the educators could lose the $20 million in taxes Remington Park contributes to education.

“That means the state will have to give us more money,” she said.”

Speaking of money and Indian casinos, this video represents poverty stricken areas in Delaware County. The houses shown are inhabited by Elders who have lived in these houses for generations. No running water, no bathrooms, no heat or cooling systems. The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma operates 7 casinos taking in millions in profits. Many are asking where is all the money going?
